Metro Mass Transit in Cape Coast cries for more buses

The inadequate buses at the disposal of the Central Regional branch of the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) is hampering the smooth running of its operations in the region.

According to the Central Regional Manager of the company, Mr Owuraku Gyimah Appiah, the company has only been running the intercity roads due to inadequate buses.

He said the branch was unable to serve all its customers due to the lack of buses. This, he said, was adversely affecting the fortunes of the company in the region.

In an interview with The Coastal Eye, Mr Appiah said out of the 55 buses allocated to the Central Region, only 30 are currently plying mostly Accra and Kumasi roads, while 25 of them have broken down.

He said the branch needed more buses to be able to run the intra-region roads as other regional offices of MMT were doing. He foresaw a crisis for the region if the broken down vehicles were not immediately replaced.

He explained that most of the buses that have been grounded were old and needed to be replaced with new ones that could withstand the vagaries of the weather and the terrain in the country.

MMT formed part of the social intervention programmes initiated by the John Agyekum Kufuor government to ease the transportation problems of the poor people in the country especially students who travelled from far and near to school.
