The University of Cape Coast and Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which would allow the university to run professional courses for personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service.
The agreement will allow the Department of Forensic Science boost the capacity of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service by training them in forensic fire investigations.
The Head of Forensic Science Department, Dr. Richmond Afoakwah indicated that the move was driven by the need to equip personnel of the GNFS with the needed skill to carry out its mandate.
“I’m sure we are all witnesses to the numerous fires that we see in our country for which investigations normally stall because the experts to do so are not present. We are going to see the beginning of this kind of training and I’m hopeful that with the kind of enthusiasm we have seen with the Ghana National Fire Service, we will have a very excellent relationship leading to the training of these experts for fire service and for mother Ghana,” he said.
The Chief Fire Officer of the GNFS, Edwin Ekow Blankson, said the collaboration will address the various challenges that the institution has been battling with.
He said in the wake of technological advancement, this will equip the service with the required expertise.
He also commended the Department of Forensic Science for their proactive move.
On his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah expressed his consent for the collaboration indicating it would go a long way to benefit students of the department as well.
He assured GNFS of the University’s commitment in ensuring the success of the collaboration.
